A Legacy of Partnership.
A Future in Motion.

Cupola Academy was founded by Julia Bergson-Shilcock and Michael Hilbert, two lifelong educators with deep roots in learner-centered education. Julia is the daughter of Peter Bergson and Susan Shilcock, who together developed an approach to education grounded in trust, collaboration, and meaningful engagement over five decades ago. In 1978, Peter and Susan founded Open Connections, a homeschooling resource center they led with intention, integrity, and innovation for nearly 30 years.

Julia grew up as a learner in that community and witnessed firsthand the passion and expertise it takes to run a mission-driven organization. After graduating from college in 2003, she joined her parents full-time. Mike entered the family legacy in 2005, and in 2007 he and Julia stepped into co-directorship of Open Connections, ushering in a second generation of leadership. They remained at the helm until 2020.

Meet the Founders

When the Open Connections board and interim director began making decisions that were antithetical to the founding family’s values — and to their beliefs about what is safe and ethical — Julia and Mike made a bold move: to start anew, by founding Cupola Academy, an organization committed to being scientifically-minded and making evidence-based decisions in regards to health and safety. With the full support of the Bergson-Shilcock family, veteran staff, the organization’s two largest and longest-standing donors, and numerous community members and alumni, Cupola Academy was born.

Today, Cupola honors that original legacy — and expands it. We remain grounded in the principles of youth ownership, partnership, and real work, while embracing 21st-century needs such as social and environmental justice, equity, and learner autonomy.

Our History

Meet the Founders

Cupola’s co-directors, Julia and Mike, are both lifelong learners, experienced leaders, and passionate advocates for educational transformation.

Together, they oversee the day-to-day operations of Cupola Academy and work closely with staff, families, and the board to ensure the learning environment remains responsive, intentional, and deeply human.

They are also the parents of three lifelong homeschoolers (ages 16, 14, and 11), all of whom attend Cupola Academy. Their vision for CA is both professional and profoundly personal.

Facilitators, Collaborators, &
Co-Creators of Learning

Cupola is powered by a dedicated team of expertly trained and seasoned facilitators, staff, and educators who bring creativity, care, and depth to every learning experience.

Our facilitators are walking alongside youth rather than standing in front of them. They design interdisciplinary learning invitations, co-create with youth, and build the trust that makes challenge possible.

Honoring the Past.

Creating the Future.

Cupola Academy continues to evolve — not to follow trends, but to meet the real needs of learners and families today.

At Cupola Academy, we are building a vibrant learning ecosystem that grows through meaningful partnerships with community organizations. We are expanding access by offering summer programs, increasing financial aid, and delivering workshop series for the broader community.

Central to this vision is the transformation of Diamond Rock Farm into a fully-realized, dynamic, learner-centered educational space — a hub where community, creativity, and curiosity converge to cultivate a thriving culture of learning.

We are building something lasting — not just for now, but for the next generation.
