Afternoon
Afternoons in CYP integrate humanities, English, and leadership, connecting academic learning to the wider world through literature, civic engagement, and creative expression. Youth explore the intersections of story, society, and self—building the ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and lead with empathy.
In literature, the group delves into Shakespeare’s Macbeth, examining themes of ambition, morality, and power through reading, discussion, performance, and analysis. They compare stage and film interpretations, analyze character psychology, and express insights through creative projects such as illuminated letters, visual storyboards, and Lego scene recreations. Word study and spelling work build language fluency, while writing exercises develop persuasive and reflective voice.
Civics and social studies sessions expand global and civic awareness through news literacy, structured debates, and current event analysis. Weekly New York Times quizzes, discussions on voting rights, and research on constitutional amendments or AI policy challenge youth to connect historical knowledge with contemporary issues. They prepare for sections of the U.S. Citizenship Test, explore state and world geography, and engage in civic simulations such as Model Senate and the Global Economic Forum.
Afternoons also serve as a hub for leadership and community planning. Youth organize fundraisers, coordinate bake sales, and collaborate on designing their culminating end-of-year trip. This learner-driven environment fosters initiative, responsibility, creativity, and a strong sense of personal and collective agency.
